The Holy Father has declared 2025 a Jubilee Year, an event that occurs every 25 years. The theme for Jubilee 2025 is “Pilgrims of Hope,” symbolizing a year of renewed hope for a world grappling with the effects of war, the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the climate crisis.
The two cathedrals of the diocese, St. Agnes Cathedral, Springfield, and St. Mary of the Annunciation Cathedral, Cape Girardeau, are the designated locations for the Jubilee Year of Hope. In St. Mary Cathedral, to the front left, pilgrims may find an actual relic of the True Cross. In St. Agnes Cathedral, near the Blessed Sacrament, pilgrims will find a crucifix on display. As part of the Jubilee Year, those who participate in the sacrament of penance and reconciliation and attend Holy Mass along with the reception of Holy Communion within a 20-day period of visiting the cathedral—praying the Nicene or Apostles Creed, the OurFather, Hail Mary and Glory Be for the intentions of the Holy Father—may receive a plenary indulgence. Please encourage your people to make a “pilgrimage” to one of our two cathedrals and engage in the Jubilee Year of Hope. Additional information can be found on the diocesan website here, and on the USCCB Website.
